Future Relationships and MA Alimony Reform
After divorce it is important for people to move forward, to experience this new chapter in their lives, and to rediscover themselves. Often with this rediscovery comes new relationships, With the new
Massachusetts alimony modification, legislation has taken into account the possibility of new relationship post-divorce and has designated how much or how little these new relationships should effect the divorcees'
alimony settlement. The following is what legislation has decided:
1. If the recipient of the alimony moves in with another partner, their alimony may be "suspended, reduced or terminated" after 3 months of cohabitation.
2. If the payer remarries his/her's new spouse's assets and income are not a factor in redeterming an alimony settlement.
3. Alimony is terminated upon remarriage of the recipient.
