Saving Time and Money During Divorce
Divorce can be expensive, but there are ways to save time and money throughout the process. Once a married couple decides to divorce, they should contact an attorney. After the husband or wife meets with an attorney, he or she should have developed a precise, written statement identifying what exactly they want to achieve by the end of this process. It is important to make sure that every step that is taken during the divorce moves toward this goal.
It is beneficial to request that your attorney estimate the costs of each action he takes before they occur. It will also save time if you ask your attorney to handle issues regarding the divorce in a collaborative fashion. This means that he should agree with your husband or wife's attorneys to jointly hire experts such as CPA's and custody experts. It will also save time if you treat the divorce as a professional negotiation and leave all past emotional issues out of it.
To save time and money, inform your attorney that you do not want copies of everything he or she does in connection to your case. Only important documents should be forwarded to your attention. Do not call your attorney on a daily, or even weekly, basis. Call your attorney only when necessary and keep the calls short. Your attorney will contact you when they need something or to inform you about any updates. If you have a question, e-mail your lawyer.
There are many other ways to save money during your divorce, including asking your attorney to tape record non-critical depositions instead of hiring a court reporter or avoiding asking your attorney to subpoena any unnecessary witnesses or documents.
