When our nation's current seniors were growing up, societal stigma about premarital sex, fear, and lack of birth control had many couples rushing out of college and running down the aisle. These lustful engagements had many people feeling weighed down by much more than a wedding ring. Many people's faith had them fearful of being banned to hell for premarital sex and in some states the use of birth control was punishable by the law. The friction between such religious and societal shame against natural hormonal drives had many young men and women more focused on achieving their "MRS" degree than their bachelors.
